Selling used tires is a lucrative business in the US - and on eBay!!!  Many retailers and dealers that sell wholesale used tires have profited greatly from this business.  In fact, according to a survey conducted by the Rubber Manufacturers Association, about 30 million used tires are being sold each year.  This figure means 10% of all tires sold in the US came from used tire sellers.

It is true that a used tire is much cheaper compared to a brand new tire.  For this reason, many consumers prefer to buy used tires for their car instead of buying new ones.  Because car maintenance can be costly, consumers are always looking for possible ways to save money.

However, consumers should be properly warned about the risks of buying used tires.  Using old tires can pose safety hazards which can endanger people’s lives.  Usually, consumers can’t tell from a tire’s appearance if it is still in good condition or not.  Thus, it is possible to buy a used tire that looks like it’s still in great condition, without realizing that the tire is already unsafe for traveling.

With this in mind, getting a bargain should not be a consumer’s only concern when purchasing car tires. More importantly, one has to consider the risks involved in buying used tires.  Why is it unsafe to buy used tires?  First of all, used tires are old tires that may have already been used for 5 to six years or more.  Oxidation takes place from the inside so old tires can look good as new from the outside, making it difficult to judge whether it’s still safe or not.

Another point to consider would be the way wholesalers treat used tires before selling them in the market.  Usually, wholesalers collect used tires from salvage yards, tire service centers, and consumers who sell used tires at a low price.  Afterwards, these tires are recycled, which means they are carefully cleaned or painted to make them look good as new before putting them back in the market. 

Naturally, suppliers of wholesale used tires can afford to sell these items at an incredibly low price and still earn remarkable profit.  If you are a consumer, it is recommended to shop for new tires instead from reputable merchants of tires and other car accessories.  Don’t take the risk of installing your car with a used tire which may already be unsafe for traveling.  Remember, the money you save from purchasing used tires can cost you more than what you bargained for.
