Enclosed Car Shipping: The Pros & Cons Of Shipping Your Car In An Enclosure

Enclosed car shipping: is it worth the extra money?

Most reputable companies offer enclosed car shipping in addition to the old-fashioned open transport services. Enclosed car shipping (usually in containers) is supposed to be much safer, but the prices some companies call for that are staggering. The question is: is it worth the extra money you pay for the service?

Enclosed shipping (on the right) costs more
but it MIGHT be worth the extra cost?

In favor of enclosed shipping ...

Choosing an enclosed car shipping option is 99% safe. Full stop. Theoretically there are only three ways your car can be harmed:

A serious car accident may damage the container and the car inside. The damages will be much lesser though than in case of having no container to protect the cargo

The driver does not strap your car in properly

Someone deliberately opens the container in an attempt to steal a car (very unlikely).

Enclosed car shipping protects you from all other common reasons of scratching such as bumping your car during loading/unloading, water damages etc.

Against enclosed shipping ...

The price. In most cases you will be charged 40-60% more than in case of a normal car transport service. If your car is new, exotic or simply very expensive, enclosed car shipping is probably the best way to move it around long-distance. If it is just some 5-year-old family car, container is probably a bit too pricey to be worth the trouble. Just make sure you will insure your car before shipping it anywhere!

And don't worry – you should insure your car before shipping anyway, even if you're going to use enclosed car shipping service. Without it, a simple car accident on a highway may change your $100.000 car into a pile of smoking junk.
