Express auto transport: what you can expect

Express auto transport is one of the things we do really need when we move from one city to another. Instead of living without a car (or borrowing, or taking one from your kid) for almost a week your car will spend in the transport, we'd love to have it shipped one day, fly to the destination city the next day and see our car on our new driveway. Unfortunately, the fact that we need it so much may cloud our vision. Express auto transport services are not something that come easily and all too often is just one of the unkept promises of an auto transport company.

Overnight transport? Hardly

Unless the contract says that the express auto transport company has to pay a fee for the late delivery, overnight or 24-hour transport is all but a myth. In most cases express auto transport is done in two days. One day your car is taken onto a trailer and moved to the shipment center where it waits for a truck going to the destination city. Then it is loaded and shipped to the city where it often gets to the shipment center again where it is unloaded and then loaded again on another truck that delivers it to your house.

The whole process usually takes 36 to 72 hours – there are just too many thing that can go wrong, especially that everyone is in a terrible hurry, to really count on the 24-hour delivery time. All too often you are asked to pay for an express delivery and then you find out that the driver mixed the delivery address or forgets about you or scratch your car thanks to loading it hastily into the trailer.

The bottom line ...

Don't choose a company only because it offers express auto transport services. It is usually better to wait one more day and get your car for a normal fee, with no damages and no mixed delivery addresses - though having a nice Lamborghini delivered by an accident might be a nice, but short surprise.
