International Car Shipping FAQ

Most international car shipping is handled first on
a ship and, secondly, sent via railroad cars

Will I need to deal with Customs myself?

During the international car shipping procedure someone has to deal with customs. Some companies ask you to do it yourself, some have special agents to manage all thing connected to customs and some ignore these matters completely. Before you decide on an international car shipping company, make sure which category it belongs to. This is especially important if you plan to move your car somewhere outside the North America or European Union – the customs fees might be ridiculously high!

Will my car be insured?

Unless it is expressly noted otherwise, your car won't be covered by any insurance above $500. That's what the Maritime Law states and 99% of international car shipping is done by container or ro-ro ships. If you want any additional insurance, you have to buy it yourself. Check at your shipping company – they may offer you some support – but make sure to see what other insurance companies have in offer as well.

How will my car be transported?

Basically there are three methods of international car shipping. First, it may be done by trucks, just like in case of intra-national transport.

The other two methods include ships. Your car can either shipped in a container (more expensive, but safer) or will be rolled-in into a ro-ro ship (cheaper, but makes your car more prone to scratches or dents). Either way, your car will be 99% safe against any external problems such as salt or excess moisture.
