Used Car Extended Warranty: Two Basic Types Of Extended Warranties For Your Used Car

Used car extended warranty types

Basically there are two used car extended warranty types: “mechanical breakdown” and “wear & tear”. The first one is slightly cheaper, but covers only apparent breakdown. The other covers normal car use, but is a bit more expensive. Most used car owners spend days to decide which kind of extended warranty they should buy. The answer is: all car owners need both of them.

“Mechanical breakdown”

This kind of used car extended warranty covers every breakdown that has happened, but wasn't caused by the natural wear of mechanism. It does not cover anything outside it. So, if you need to replace worn filters that haven't broken down yet or put some new components in place of those that are falling apart, this kind of warranty won't help you a bit. What is also important, this warranty does not cover faulty components that decided to break down before their time.

“Wear & Tear” warranty

While “mechanical breakdown” warranty is something you definitely need to have, it has to be paired with the “wear and tear” used car extended warranty.  Why?

First, there is a question of a common trick used by the insurers. If you have only the mechanical breakdown insurance, they tend to classify every  problem in your car as natural wear and tear damage. Of course if you have only the wear and tear breakdown, they will in turn classify everything as mechanical breakdowns.

Here's the bottom line: if you want to keep your car safely insured, you have to have both types of extended used car warranties. Otherwise the insurer will do its very best to avoid paying you for all the repairs.
